Foods

I'm a very picky person when it comes to food; I have a very specific palate and it's usually hard for me to try new foods.I came to Germany with a very basic idea of German cuisine. I was thinking the typical things like beer and sausages, and yes, obviously they are part of their cuisine, but there's much more and it has surprised me a lot. The first thing that captivated me was pretzels; they're heart-shaped breads with salt. They're very simple, but I simply love them, whether with butter or plain. You can also eat them with a cheese spread called Obatzda, which is very typical of Bavaria and is a combination of mature Camembert (or Brie), butter, paprika and a touch of beer. I've tried this cheese several times and it's great. Some people consider it very strong, but in my opinion, it goes very well with pretzels. One food I really liked was potato soup. I tried it at Johanna's house and I liked it a lot. Its German name is Kartoffelsuppe.Of course I tried the beer; I started to like it in Germany. It's curious because there they drink it as an accompaniment to meals; it's very normalized for them.We often used to have Flammkuchen for dinner, which is a kind of pizza but in the German style; it has a much thinner crust than a normal pizza and they add vegetables or bacon with onions, it doesn't have sauce like the Italian one. Finally, I want to mention a dish that Johanna's father used to cook for me. I don't know if it's typical in Germany, but it consisted of toasted cabbage with a sweet sauce and mayonnaise. I don't really know what it's called, but I loved it; I'd never tried it before!
